In a 1933 lecture he said “Every poet would like, I fancy, to be able to think that he had some direct social utility. He was long a critic and admirer of Elizabethan and Jacobean verse drama witness his allusions to Webster, Thomas Middleton, William Shakespeare and Thomas Kyd in The Waste Land. With the important exception of Four Quartets, Eliot directed much of his creative energies after Ash Wednesday to writing plays in verse, mostly comedies or plays with redemptive endings. Thomas Stearns Eliot OM (Septem– January 4, 1965) was an essayist, publisher, playwright, literary and social critic and “one of the twentieth century’s major poets.” ![]()

But the thing about Higashino’s stories is that his plots are pretty intricate, following the rules of logic and science, that I knew I’d probably forgotten howdunnit. It was only after the first few pages that I realised I had actually seen the film version of The Devotion of Suspect X a few years ago on a flight to Japan. I’m a huge fan of Galileo, the Japanese tv series based on Higashino’s short stories featuring the genius physicist Manabu Yukawa (called Detective Galileo by his police friend) so was thrilled to see he featured in this new English tranlsation. So when I spotted Teresa’s review of The Devotion of Suspect X, I knew I had to get my hands on this one. ![]() ![]() Of course, that would mean slogging through the Japanese which, let me tell you, is no mean feat for someone whose knowledge of kanji is akin to a primary school student. Along with Miyuki Miyabe and Natsuo Kirino, Keigo Higashino is one of Japan’s foremost writers of mysteries and I’ve been meaning to try some of his books which he publishes at a prolific rate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s miraculous, the way the water flows into the pipe and from the mouth of the faucet, summoned by a twist of the hand. A crude drain exited from the side of the house into the dirt.īut there’s always a moment when turning on a spigot after a renovation. The only plumbing was in the bathroom and the rinse tanks: two big concrete boxes outside on the porch plugged with sections of PVC pipe. No screens on the windows, no curtains, no screen on the sliding door. No heater for the shower, and a shower drain that didn’t work, so no shower. There was no furniture, no kitchen sink, no fridge, no stove top, no washer, running water only in bathroom and the rinse tanks outside on the porch. Though it had been suggested by many that we find a hotel until Monday, we didn’t, because I knew that roughing it would force us to faster action. The first day in our house was really kamikaze house-finishing at its best. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Contagious de jonah berger![]() Choosing a New Board Leader: Eight Questions March 7, 2023.Speak With Confidence: Four Fixes That Work April 11, 2023.Meet the Authors: Wharton’s Katy Milkman on How to Change May 14, 2021. ![]() ![]()
